What Not to Eat on a Low Carb Diet

There are certain foods to avoid when following a low carb diet. Processed and packaged foods are usually ones to avoid. Breads, pastas, candy, sugary and starchy foods are very high in carbs. Always check labels and look for added sugar. Don’t forget that sugar has MANY different names. However, there are often low carb substitutes for these items. Beverages:

  • Soda
  • Fruit Juices
  • Beer
  • Mixed Drinks (spirits are usually lower carb, but the juices and mix-ins add lots of sugar)

Bread and Grains:

  • Bread (white, whole wheat)
  • Tortillas
  • Bagels
  • Muffins
  • Donuts

Certain Dairy:

  • Sweetened yogurt
  • Low fat dairy products

Fruit:

  • Most fruit is high in carbs, so eat fruit sparingly
  • The highest carb fruits include: Bananas, Mangoes, Pineapple, Grapes/Raisins
  • Basically, there are 6 fruits that CAN be eaten on a low carb diet: Coconut, Whole Cranberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Barberries

Starchy Vegetables:

  • Corn
  • All root vegetables
  • Potatoes/Sweet Potatoes
  • Beets
  • Peas
  • Onions

Packaged Foods:

  • Always read labels, but generally packaged foods will have added sugar
  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Dessert Cakes
  • Chips
  • Crackers

Sweets:

  • Cookies
  • Packaged candy
  • Milk Chocolate

Beans/Legumes:

  • Kidney, black, navy, pinto beans
  • Chick Peas
  • Lentils
  • Peas
